How to Network in Person and Online

How to Network in Person and Online 1200 630 Abbie Ashford

Most professionals, whether they are seasoned in the field or just getting started, will tell you something along the lines of “networking is the most vital thing you can do to build your career.” Networking is a tool that builds relationships, creates opportunities and sets you up on a path to success. What these professionals might not be telling you is how to do it. There are two main platforms on which networking can occur: in person and online.

In-person networking takes many forms and can occur in a wide variety of settings. It can look like a scheduled 15-minute chat over coffee or giving your 30-second personal pitch to someone you’ve bumped into at a tradeshow. Other networking opportunities include conferences, workshops, meetings and social or industry events. In-person networking is your chance to build a relationship and exchange information via a face-to-face interaction. Here are some tips to ensure you are networking effectively and taking full advantage of in-person opportunities.

Attend Events and Have Goals Outlined

Whether you are looking to find mentorship, meet like-minded people or simply build your contact list, going to industry events is a vital place to start. It sounds intuitive, but making an effort to put yourself out there and be present at as many potential networking opportunities as possible is step one. Before attending these events, set achievable goals for yourself to meet X number of people or add X number of people to your LinkedIn connection list. By doing so, your mindset will be focused and your goal of networking is more likely to be achieved.

Be Confident and Prepared

Approaching strangers or leaders in your field can be daunting, so take the time to prepare yourself mentally. Planning your pitch, speaking points and questions in advance will help you approach these interactions with confidence. You should be entering these conversations with knowledge of yourself, your goals as a professional and how that individual can help you achieve them, even if it is limited.

Listen Actively

Some networking opportunities will not be focused on you but rather the person you are interacting with. Allow them the time to share their story and advice, and don’t be afraid to pick their brain by asking related questions. This displays your attentiveness, interest and appreciation, and is more likely to build a genuine relationship.

Follow Up Afterwards

Networking doesn’t stop after the first conversation. To establish rapport, send a thank you note after meeting with someone and include specific details to remind them of the valuable conversation you shared. Add this person on LinkedIn to maintain your relationship and potentially schedule another meeting.

With that said, networking doesn’t happen exclusively in person. Online networking reduces barriers of location, time and opportunity, allowing you to create connections from wherever you are with whomever you are interested in. This can look like LinkedIn connections and messages, virtual one-on-ones and online events such as webinars, workshops and forums. Many of the tips mentioned for in-person networking, such as attending events and following up after, are also applicable to online networking. Here are some additional ways you can network online to achieve the same outcomes as in-person networking.

Build an Online Presence

LinkedIn is a hub for online networking. To use it effectively, ensure your profile is complete with a photo, a personalized “About” section and all of your relevant experiences and skills. You should also utilize the platform to showcase your work and achievements. If you have a portfolio or personal website, make sure that is visible on your profile, too. This lets potential connections know who you are and what you value in an easy and accessible way.

Utilize Social Media

If you are looking to build connections online, be active on professional social media platforms and industry-related forums to increase your visibility and establish your reputation. Share content regularly that features your accomplishments and passions to demonstrate your relevance and expertise. Join relevant groups and follow pages/people that you are interested in. This is a simple way to get your name out there and be heard within your industry.

Whether you are looking to progress your career, build your business, share your knowledge or create friendships within your industry, networking is vital. Take advantage of every opportunity, in-person and online, to maximize your reach and establish connections that will last a lifetime.
